Websites/Databases to Search for Providers: In-Person & Telehealth; Insurance and Out of Pocket
Providers may provide in-person and/or telemental health services.
Some therapists may be listed in multiple places.
Providers may choose/pay to be listed so all providers may not be represented.
Various Filters allow for searching for specific preferences and needs.
Go to the chosen therapist search website. Put in your local zip code (in-person) or state you are in (telehealth) and you will get a list of providers and their profiles. Often, you can also filter for your insurance, issues you want to address in counseling, and other preferences.
Review your options and narrow down your choices to a few names.

Reaching out to Potential Providers-What to say
Helpful Hints: When calling for a counselor, remember you may have to leave a voice mail. You could choose to email them rather than call. Keep in mind, email is not a secure form of communication so you would want to limit the story you include in an email. Whether talking to someone, leaving a voice mail, or sending an email, you will need to include the following information:
Your Name
Your Call back number
Brief topics you want to address in therapy (ie. anxiety, depression, trauma, etc)
If you have insurance or need sliding scale
If they will return to in person versus continue with tele-health
Request a free consultation phone call
Script: to sayon a voice mail or to a live person or paste into email:
Hi! My name is ____________________.
My call back number is _____________________.
I am a student at Texas State University.
I am looking for individual therapy to address __________________________(ie. anxiety, depression, trauma, etc).
I have/don’t have _____________________insurance or need sliding scale.
I prefer _______________ (in-person or telehealth or doesn’t matter).
Please let me know if you are taking new clients and when we can do a consultation call to talk further. Thank you! Good Bye!

Understanding Your Insurance Benefits for Outpatient Mental Health
What is the name of your insurance company? ______________________________
What is the customer service number on the back of the insurance card? __________________________
(Hint: Insurance companies often refer to mental health as behavioral health. There may be a separate phone number for behavioral health. If so, call that one first.)
You will want to get to Benefits and Eligibility. You may have to follow the automated prompts until you reach a customer service representative.
You want to say “I want to know my Insurance Benefits for Mental Health and find out how much it will cost for me to attend (Individual Counseling, Psychological Testing, Psychiatry/Med Management). I’d like the information for both In-Person and Telehealth options.”
1. Co-pay: A fixed amount you pay for covered health care services to providers who contract with your health insurance or plan.
2. Deductible: An amount you could owe during a coverage period (usually one year) for covered health care services before your plan begins to pay.
*Co-Insurance: Your share of the costs of a covered health care service, calculated as a percentage (for example, 20%) of the allowed amount for the service. You generally pay coinsurance plus any deductibles you owe.
3. Please email me a list of Providers for my area (zip code: 78666)
4. Is There Out of Network Benefits-to see a provider that does not take your insurance (less reimbursement and you will have to submit the claim yourself)
6. **Do I have access to an Employee Assistance Program? How many sessions are covered? What is the provider network?
Glossary of Health Coverage and Medical Terms: https://www.healthcare.gov/sbc-glossary/
*Coinsurance is the amount you are obliged to pay for services after you have satisfied any copay or deductible required by your plan. Coinsurance is typically expressed as a percentage. For example, the representative might say your coinsurance is 20% after the deductible is met. This means the insurance will pay 80% and you pay the remaining 20% of the cost of the appointment after the deductible has been met.
**An EAP is a separate benefit from an employer so if your insurance is through a parents work, you may have access to an EAP. An EAP will cover a certain number of counseling sessions at no cost but you will have to speak to a representative with the EAP who will conduct a brief assessment and then tell you what it covers. The EAP may have providers that are not providers with your insurance. If possible, try to select a provider that is also on your insurance so you can stay with this provider after the EAP sessions are completed.

Medication Evaluations
If you want to be evaluated for medication for a mental health concern, please try the following:
- Call the customer service number on the back of your insurance card and ask the representative to send you a list of in-network psychiatrists and psychiatric nurse practitioners.
- Make an appointment with a primary care physician at the Student Health Center to discuss medication options. If needed, the physician will refer you to a psychiatrist.
- Select the Psychiatrists tab on the search database Psychology Today. You can filter by zip code/state and insurance. The Counseling Center does not endorse any specific providers.
If a student is engaged in counseling at the Counseling Center, the clinician may refer a student to a Student Health Center physician or psychiatrist for a medication evaluation
